Professional Ecologist for over 22 years

Andy’s experience covers survey, planning, environmental assessment, policy and environmental audit. This includes appraisal, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Appropriate Assessment and a wide range of regular technical work including hydrological, fisheries and ecological studies for terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine and marine systems and all aspects of environmental assessment, including interfacing with other environmental and engineering disciplines.

Since 1999, Andy has advised the Scottish Executive/Transport Scotland on ecological issues. This has included taking account of ecological interests within the design, mitigation and implementation of a large number of transport projects; for example, the Clackmannanshire Bridge, the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and EIA of the Forth Replacement Crossing. He also advised on the appropriate assessments regarding fisheries, habitats and birds for the Forth Replacement Crossing as part of the Parliamentary Bill process.

Andy is recognised as an expert in the provision of advice in relation to Appropriate Assessment to both applicants and competent authorities and, as such, was heavily involved in the Strategic Transport Projects Review for the Scottish Government.

Implementation of environmental mitigation has always been an important area of Andy’s work. Relevant schemes include the Environmental Project Manager role for the Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine Railway and various aspects of the development of the shorefront projects in Edinburgh. Past experience includes: mitigation work at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports and an Ecological Clerk of Works role on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

Andy has held survey and development licenses for a wide range of species including freshwater pearl mussel, badgers, great crested newt, otter etc.

Due to his wide ranging knowledge and practical experience, Andy has been an ecological expert witness for a wide range of development-related projects across Britain, both for the proponents and statutory objectors. He has also provided environmental expertise for planning appeals and a recent civil and criminal prosecution case.
